In this vignette, the year 1 teacher describes how she used data gathered from an analysis of students’ reading to plan for differentiated teaching and learning about using semantic knowledge to support the development of phrasing and fluency.
The teacher establishes a clear statement of the learning intent for the whole class lesson and clearly describes and models the process of connecting to prior knowledge before reading. She demonstrates how this process supports the use of semantic knowledge during reading.
In a small group guided reading lesson, the teacher demonstrates how she uses flexible grouping to target learning about the use of semantic knowledge to support the development of phrasing and fluency.
